Undercarriage costs are predictable—if you inspect early
On excavators and other tracked equipment, undercarriage wear often represents a large share of total maintenance spend. The good news is that most failures give weeks or months of warning if you inspect consistently.
What to inspect each service interval
Track links and pins
Look for cracked links, loose pins, and excessive internal wear. Dry or noisy articulation often means lubrication has failed and accelerated wear has started.
Rollers and idlers
Check for oil leaks at seals, flat spots, and abnormal noise during travel. A seized roller can damage the track in a single shift.
Drive sprockets
Inspect tooth profile. Hooked or sharply pointed teeth indicate the sprocket is near end of life and may accelerate track wear.
Track tension
Follow OEM guidance for sag measurement. Over-tension increases load on pins and bushings; under-tension can derail the track.
